Pentecostal Wisconsin (actual review)

Topic Tags

Ryan Paulson performs Pentecostal Wisconsin with a great mix of songs (singing and guitar - church songs and original pieces), comedy, and story-telling. You can’t help but want to sing along to songs you may have wished you’d forgotten. In between, members of Ryan’s childhood church community come to life in funny caricatures (sometimes when someone makes fun of the bizarre traits of people you don’t know, it can come off as mean or disrespectful, but this is definitely not the case in this show). The show becomes a coming-of-age story of someone trying to fit into a world most of us couldn’t quite imagine.

What’s really captivating about this heart-felt and funny show is that it’s part guy-next-store likability and part other-worldly Scandinavian/Pentecostal/Wisconsinite. The house was packed, and the show was VERY well received. As several of us talked about the show afterwards, we all agreed that it was one of our favorite comedies we’d seen at Rogue so far! Check it out at Starline on Sun 3/2 at 2:30, Wed 3/5 at 5:30, Fri 3/7 at 7:00, and Sat 3/8 at 4:00.

Pentecostal Wisconsin - Miss it and You're Going to HELL

Pentecostal Wisconsin moves to the top of my list of comedy style shows. Pentecostal Wisconsin is the perfect storm of a comedy show. The scene of northern Wisconsin coupled with a Pentecostal church whose members are strangely embarrassed by churchgoers who, overcome by the Holy Spirit, speak out in tongues makes for a phantasmagoric setting. Add to this Ryan's wonderful storytelling abilities, which includes the brutally honest exposure of the inner turmoil of a burgeoning Pentecostal, who is on the verge of either leading his own flock or turning away from his "friend Jesus."

Pentecostal Wisconsin takes you places you never knew you wanted to go, and lets you laugh all the while. This one is not to be missed...unless you want to go to HELL.
